My little family is about to take a loooong car trip. As in 1,158 miles. AND we have a 3 1/2 year old and an 18-month-old.
So along with the bazillion DVDs we're taking, I wanted to have a little back up in case they get really super restless (which is inevitable). So I took a trip to the Dollar Store and came up with my Toddler Travel Bags:
I'm hoping this will save us when the wiggles overcome my babies or when tantrums are being thrown. Here's what I picked up:
For my boy:
I thought my little boy would love being a sheriff while in the car, so I got him some badges. The binoculars are so he can watch the landscape go by. He LOVES Mickey, so hopefully he'll want to color in his Mickey coloring book. We've been working on writing the ABC's so getting a magnetic pan with some ABC magnets will he his education for the day. And when it gets dark, I'll give him the glow stick!
For my girl:
For my little princess, I got her a book to basically tear apart, some bracelets (she's super girly), a little doll to play with, and a feely caterpillar. And of course, the glow stick for when it's dark!
I could have just thrown these into the bags I got but I wanted to make it a little more interesting. The kids will get one toy every now and then. And to make the process last longer, I wrapped them up. (Can you tell how desperate a parent gets while traveling?!)
So my last step was to number the presents so that I would know which ones came next but now my son can read the numbers and figure out which is next. More education! That's never bad, right?
Hopefully this will help with our massive car ride! Any other tips??

Way to go, K! Your kids will adore these. My daughter is currently looking over my shoulder, oooh-ing and aah-ing about your little bags.
ReplyDeleteThis is a very cute idea.. My babies are all grown up now.. but I sure should have done this when they were little, long trips to Savannah Ga (6 hour drive) had them driving me nuts back then ((:
ReplyDeleteBut boy I sure do miss those days...
Have a safe, fun, trip!! and enjoy those babies now, they grow up sooo fast!!

Apologies if I post this twice because my browser went all weird on me. Another tip I have is to buy 'Con-Tact Brand Self-Adhesive Multi-Purpose Chalkboard Liner' from Amazon. I bought it to make a temporary chalk board in my kitchen then I cut a piece and stuck it on my cookie sheet. Now not only is it magnetic (I have alphabet and truck magnets) but also a chalk board! I take a 8-11 hour flight (From USA to England where my family is) twice a year so I've been stocking up on ideas for a while! Love your glow stick idea!
